DESCRIPTION:Kat’s Backyard Film Fest is one installment of Backyard Shenanigans\, an annual summer series of interactive art experiences hosted in a backyard setting that cultivates community & creative connections. This is Backyard Shenanigans’ first film festival and the event will open with an open mic. Submissions are due May 15th.  \n\nThe festival starts June 14. \nAll genres/forms accepted. Seeking narratives\, documentaries\, music videos\, animation\, and experimental works. Applicants should be 18 and over. \nFilm entries should not exceed 45 minutes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDue to the 50th year anniversary of Buffalo’s Juneteenth Festival Celebration\, priority will be given to Black Buffalo-based filmmakers. DESCRIPTION:Buffalo Arts Studio is pleased to present In Between Two Tall Mountains by Gabrielle Hall and Breathing In and Out by Brianna Bernas\, concurrent exhibitions by two senior fiber art majors from Buffalo State University that explore concepts of emotional resilience\, adaptability\, and making material the immaterial.  \nThe exhibitions will be on view from April 24 through May 30\, 2026. An artist reception will be held on Saturday\, May 9\, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Both artists will speak briefly about their work starting at 12:00 pm. \nGabrielle Hall’s In Between Two Tall Mountains is a collection of soft sculptures\, weavings\, and collages are an exploration of how fiber can be utilized in ways beyond two-dimensional visuals\, bridging the gap between art and the space it inhabits. Eliran Avni and Natasha Farny\, and in partnership with Director of Opera Studies Don Marrazzo\, that provides students the opportunity to perform in off-campus venues to a wider audience. DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presents \nThe Travesties & Canela\nThe Big Easy in Buffalo Local series\nSportsmen’s Tavern\nThursday April 30\, 5pm doors\, 7pm show\n$15 \n \n  \nThe Travesties (garage folk) & Canela (tango/string quartet)\, performing separately and together. Sally (of The Travesties) will be writing a string quartet arrangement for a Travesties original song and Vanessa (of Canela) will be writing a full rock band arrangement for a Canela original – to be performed by both bands together! \n  \nBuffalo-based folk rock band The Travesties breathe fire into folk songs old and new\, including a treasure trove of Americana and Irish music. Songwriter Tyler Bagwell is a historian with a busker’s voice in search of couplets within the notion that “history rhymes.” Fiddler Sally Schaefer is an ethnomusicologist with wide-ranging folk and traditional music interests. Together\, with bassist Patrick Jackson of Folkfaces and drummer Marc Smith of BTPM The Bridge\, they invent and reinvent songs highlighting events\, people\, and places of local and national note. \n  \nCANELA is not your ordinary quartet. Augmented by bass and percussion\, we take a fresh look at what a string ensemble can accomplish and communicate when traditional boundaries of genre and style are reimagined. \n  \nSince 2007 The Big Easy in Buffalo has brought New Orleans and Louisiana music and culture to the Western New York region several times a year for free and low-cost live performance\, as well as music education and mentoring for local musicians\, students\, and the community. Through The Big Easy in Buffalo thousands of students\, dozens of local bands\, and countless audience members in Western New York have been exposed to this unique American culture.
