SUMMARY:Buffalo Art: Kurt Treeby 'I've Got Next' - video games and art historical themes
DESCRIPTION:For this exhibition\, Buffalo artist Kurt Treeby will create three fully playable video games based on art historical themes. Adopting a retro style derived from consoles such as the Atari 2600 or Nintendo Entertainment System\, the project will include the games Constantin Brancusi’s Endless Column\, Picasso’s War\, and Un Chien Andalou. \nThese new games draw on art historical themes in the same manner as Treeby’s previous works in fiber\, utilizing imagery appropriated from pre-existing paintings and sculptures. In his fiber pieces\, the works resolve naturally into a pixelated form through crochet or cross stitch. In order to bridge this visual connection from fiber to pixels\, Treeby taught himself Game Maker Studio in order to produce work that is literally playable and not merely referential toward the form. \nWhile video games are one of the largest and most lucrative realms of the entertainment industry\, they remain\, even after many decades of development\, targets of censure and criticism — they exalt violence\, they promote anti-social behavior\, they are gigantic time sinks\, they contribute little to culture\, and so on. The truth is more complex — the sorts of unique experiences created within games are not at all dissimilar from the effects produced by great works of art (because that’s what they can be). They are filled with creative obstacles and demand creative solutions. They engage mechanisms of critical thinking. They are fueled by imagination. And the spontaneous experiences they generate — a combination of their design and how the player plays — can frequently land in a sublime place. \nIn these ways\, we discover rapidly that they are no dissimilar from that which we more commonly call art. \nThe exhibit runs through Oct. 30.

SUMMARY:Buffalo Art: Joel Mulindwa - Impressions of Gratuity
DESCRIPTION:Black Rock Arts is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by Joel Mulindwa\, titled Impressions of Gratuity. The exhibition opened Friday\, October 2. \nJoel Mulindwa (b.1996\, Nyakunde\, Democratic Republic of Congo) is an artist and educator whose work in painting\, drawing and film explores notions of human value and dignity. For his exhibition at Black Rock Arts\, Mulindwa presents a recently concluded series of pastel drawings depicting the humble and ubiquitous tip jar. \nEach drawing in Impressions of Gratuity depicts a tip jar in a local restaurant\, cafe or bookstore. Workers are rarely visible in Impressions of Gratuity. The tip jars\, with their varying degrees of adornment\, are portraits by proxy. Mulindwa deftly manages to humanize the unseen worker while raising larger questions around the intersection of gratitude and economic exchange. \nMulindwa highlights the often humorous and touchingly improvised “aesthetics of appreciation” unique to each vessel\, while summoning the symbolic and material residue of labor. For Mulindwa\, tip jars are small containers holding big questions: What is a fair exchange? How do we compensate labor beyond wages? How do we offer thanks in a society where service is expected but not always valued? What might we infer about a worker or their environs from the personalized jar itself? In the artist’s own words: \nBy isolating and elevating these objects\, I invite viewers to consider the relationships embedded within them: the tension between obligation and generosity\, the contrast between invisibility and recognition\, and the quiet persistence of hope and daily work. These drawings challenge us to look closely at what is often overlooked\, to see value in the smallest exchanges\, and to reflect on the way we acknowledge (or fail to acknowledge) the labor of others. \nConcurrent with Impressions of Gratuity\, Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University presents Finding Rest\, an exhibition of Mulindwa’s portraits of workers at their places of employment. Finding Rest explores rest as resistance\, restoration\, and recognition within contemporary labor culture. Impressions of Gratuity was born out of this portrait series\, originating as the study of a quietly insistent motif and evolving over two years into a discreet body of work. Taken together\, the exhibitions in Black Rock and Niagara Falls allow for a deep dive into the conceptual and technical craft of Mulindwa’s practice. \nJoel Mulindwa earned his MFA in Visual Arts from SUNY Buffalo and holds a BS in Business Administration\, with minors in art and political science\, from Houghton University. His paintings and drawings have been exhibited at Gallery at Seneca\, Villa Maria College\, Buffalo Arts Studio and through community initiatives associated with the Buffalo AKG Art Museum. In addition to his work in painting and pastel\, Mulindwa also experiments with analog film to craft poetic narratives around spirituality\, memory\, and the body. His films have screened at the Buffalo International Film Festival and the 716 Art Film Festival\, where his 16mm short film “Things We Cherish” received the award for Best Screenplay. Mulindwa lives with his family in Allegany County and teaches art at Houghton University and Houghton Academy. \nFollowing the opening\, Impressions of Gratuity will be on view every Saturday from noon to 4. \nAn artist’s talk and film screening are in the works. SUMMARY:Live at the Met: Macbeth
DESCRIPTION:Two of opera’s most extraordinary artists return to Live at the Met at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center for Verdi’s thrilling take on the immortal Shakespearean tale of the scheming couple determined to seize power at any cost. \nFollowing past triumphs in many of Verdi’s signature baritone roles\, Quinn Kelsey is the Scottish king haunted by the ghosts of his murderous ascent to the throne\, opposite Lise Davidsen – the world’s reigning dramatic soprano – as the power-mad Lady Macbeth\, whose ruinous ambition damns them both. \nMet Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes the podium for a penetrating production by Louisa Proske\, a brilliant young director making waves around the world. Rounding out the all-star cast are tenor Freddie De Tommaso as the heroic Macduff and bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green as Macbeth’s friend-turned-victim Banquo. \nThe Met: Live in HD is the Metropolitan Opera’s Peabody and Emmy Award–winning series of opera performances transmitted live from the stage of the Met in New York into movie theaters and event spaces worldwide. The series has made the Met the world’s leading provider of alternative cinema content and the only arts institution with an ongoing global series of this scale. When the series launched in 2006\, the Met was the first arts company to experiment this way. Since then\, the program has expanded\, with more than 32 million tickets sold to date\, and has been seen in virtually every important world capital from Paris to Cairo\, as well as in towns and villagesshakespeare spread across six continents. \nThis production runs approximately three hours\, 30 minutes\, with one intermission \nPart of Arts in the Afternoon\, which is sponsored by Dr. James M. & Marcia Merrins\, Live at the Met is underwritten with support from Daniel S. Kaufman and Timothy W. Beaver
