SUMMARY:Buffalo Art: Kurt Treeby 'I've Got Next' - video games and art historical themes
DESCRIPTION:For this exhibition\, Buffalo artist Kurt Treeby will create three fully playable video games based on art historical themes. Adopting a retro style derived from consoles such as the Atari 2600 or Nintendo Entertainment System\, the project will include the games Constantin Brancusi’s Endless Column\, Picasso’s War\, and Un Chien Andalou. \nThese new games draw on art historical themes in the same manner as Treeby’s previous works in fiber\, utilizing imagery appropriated from pre-existing paintings and sculptures. In his fiber pieces\, the works resolve naturally into a pixelated form through crochet or cross stitch. In order to bridge this visual connection from fiber to pixels\, Treeby taught himself Game Maker Studio in order to produce work that is literally playable and not merely referential toward the form. \nWhile video games are one of the largest and most lucrative realms of the entertainment industry\, they remain\, even after many decades of development\, targets of censure and criticism — they exalt violence\, they promote anti-social behavior\, they are gigantic time sinks\, they contribute little to culture\, and so on. The truth is more complex — the sorts of unique experiences created within games are not at all dissimilar from the effects produced by great works of art (because that’s what they can be). They are filled with creative obstacles and demand creative solutions. They engage mechanisms of critical thinking. They are fueled by imagination. And the spontaneous experiences they generate — a combination of their design and how the player plays — can frequently land in a sublime place. \nIn these ways\, we discover rapidly that they are no dissimilar from that which we more commonly call art. \nThe exhibit runs through Oct. 30.

SUMMARY:Buffalo Art: Kurt Treeby 'I've Got Next' - video games and art historical themes
DESCRIPTION:For this exhibition\, Buffalo artist Kurt Treeby will create three fully playable video games based on art historical themes. Adopting a retro style derived from consoles such as the Atari 2600 or Nintendo Entertainment System\, the project will include the games Constantin Brancusi’s Endless Column\, Picasso’s War\, and Un Chien Andalou. \nThese new games draw on art historical themes in the same manner as Treeby’s previous works in fiber\, utilizing imagery appropriated from pre-existing paintings and sculptures. In his fiber pieces\, the works resolve naturally into a pixelated form through crochet or cross stitch. In order to bridge this visual connection from fiber to pixels\, Treeby taught himself Game Maker Studio in order to produce work that is literally playable and not merely referential toward the form. \nWhile video games are one of the largest and most lucrative realms of the entertainment industry\, they remain\, even after many decades of development\, targets of censure and criticism — they exalt violence\, they promote anti-social behavior\, they are gigantic time sinks\, they contribute little to culture\, and so on. The truth is more complex — the sorts of unique experiences created within games are not at all dissimilar from the effects produced by great works of art (because that’s what they can be). They are filled with creative obstacles and demand creative solutions. They engage mechanisms of critical thinking. They are fueled by imagination. And the spontaneous experiences they generate — a combination of their design and how the player plays — can frequently land in a sublime place. \nIn these ways\, we discover rapidly that they are no dissimilar from that which we more commonly call art. \nThe exhibit runs through Oct. 30.

DESCRIPTION:Sportsmens presents \nMarshall Crenshaw \nWednesday\, October 28\, 2026 5pm Doors\, 7pm Show \n$40.00 + Online fee \n \n \n  \nBorn in 1953 in Detroit\, Michigan\, Marshall Crenshaw learned to tune a guitar correctly at\nage ten and has been trying ever since. His first big break came in 1978 playing John\nLennon in “Beatlemania”\, first as an understudy in New York\, then in the West Coast\ncompany\, followed by a national touring company. Removing himself from that situation in\nFeb. 1980\, Marshall settled in New York City. Enthralled by the hyper-diverse musical\nculture of the City\, and the local Rock scene in particular\, Marshall formed a Rock and Roll\nband with brother Robert on drums and Chris Donato on bass. \n  \nAfter crossing paths with the great and legendary Alan Betrock\, Marshall recorded his\ndebut single “Something’s Gonna Happen” for Betrock’s Shake Records label; at nearly the\nsame time\, legendary Rockabilly singer Robert Gordon’s recording of Marshall’s “Someday\nSomeway” was released as a single on the RCA label. These two records simultaneously\nbroke big on New York’s WNEW-FM\, causing Marshall and his trio’s local popularity to\nexplode. \n  \nAnd so began a career that’s spanned four decades\, 13 albums\, film and TV appearances\n(Buddy Holly in “La Bamba”) and thousands of live performances\nMarshall formed his current touring band in 2022\,featuring guitarist\,\nmulti-instramentalist and record producer Fernando Perdomo\,\nbassist and singer-songwriter Derrick Anderson\,\nand drummer Mark Ortmann\, founding member of the legendary Bottle Rockets. \n  \nOf his City Winery New York show last fall Infocus Visions Music & Arts Magazine hailed\,\n“Marshall Crenshaw live is an experience in itself. Forget the solo artist; this is a full\nband explosion that showcases the magic of musical synergy. Watching them on stage\nis like peeking into a creative engine room.
