SUMMARY:Buffalo Theater: 'On a First Name Basis\,' with Desiderio's at Bobby J's
DESCRIPTION:Join two of Buffalo’s top actors\, Eileen Dugan and Peter Palmisano for an unforgettable evening of laughter\, heart and sharp-tongued charm. ON A FIRST NAME BASIS\, a comedy/drama written by Norm Foster (Canada’s most produced playwright). \nON A FIRST NAME BASIS tells the story of a very successful\, but somewhat reclusive spy novelist who suddenly discovers he knows absolutely nothing about his maid of 33 years\, not even her FIRST NAME. She\, on the other hand\, knows everything about him! He makes it his mission to learn all he can about this woman who has served him for over three decades. \nThrough their conversation\, they embark on a journey of discovery that is heartwarming\, engaging and extremely moving. The dialogue is swift and laugh-out-loud funny. We find ourselves caring about these two separate souls as they emerge from behind the transparent wall of their shared existence. This is a love story\, a social commentary and a mystery tightly wrapped with witty dialogue and vivid imagery. SUMMARY:Buffalo Film: Screening of Khaled Jarrar’s 'Infiltrators' at Burning Books
DESCRIPTION:Khaled Jarrar’s stunning Infiltrators (70 minutes\, Palestine / United Arab Emirates\, 2012) is a visceral road movie that chronicles the daily travails of Palestinians of all backgrounds as they seek routes through\, under\, around\, and over a bewildering matrix of barriers and border walls in the highly militarized West Bank. Alternating between cigarette breaks\, detours\, waiting\, and moving\, Infiltrators depicts the cunning\, unnerving\, and constant struggle to defy captivity and occupation. \nFor attendees: The screening will take place at Burning Books located at 420 Connecticut Street\, Buffalo\, NY 14213. Street parking is available. For transportation by bus\, it is near stops for the 3\, 19\, 22\, and 101 bus lines. Seating is first-come\, first-serve. \nFree to attend ($10 suggested donation welcome) \nThis screening is presented as part of the series\, Infiltrators: Films on borders and resistance. Support for this program is provided by Teiger Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Film courtesy of Third World Newsreel. \nAbout the filmmaker\nKhaled Jarrar was born in Jenin\, Occupied Palestine in 1976. He lives and works in Ramallah. Jarrar completed his studies in interior design at Palestine Polytechnic University in 1996. Upon graduating he smuggled himself to work as a carpenter in Nazareth\, living as an underground “illegal” worker. In 1998 Jarrar enlisted in an intensive military training which resulted in working for Arafat as a personal body guard until Arafat’s death in 2004. Attempting to create a life between the military and an artistic practice\, Jarrar entered the field of photography in 2005. Jarrar graduated from the International Academy of Art – Palestine\, Ramallah in 2011 and completed an MFA in fine art from the University of Arizona in 2019. \nJarrar\, a multidisciplinary artist\, explores modern power struggles and their sociocultural impact on ordinary citizens through highly symbolic photographs\, videos\, film\, and performative interventions. His State of Palestine project was featured in the 7th Berlin Biennale. Where We Lost Our Shadows\, his filmic collaboration with Pulitzer prize winning composer Du Yun\, was shown at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. Jarrar’s work has been featured at Maraya Art Centre\, Sharjah; the New Museum\, New York City; the University of Applied Arts\, Vienna; the 15th Jakarta Biennale; 52nd October Salon\, Belgrade; Al-Ma’mal Foundation\, Jerusalem; and the London Film Festival. Infiltrators\, Jarrar’s first feature length film\, was a documentary about the business of Palestinian’s “illegally” crossing and won the FIPRESCI Award for Best Documentary\, Jury Special Award and the Muhr Arab Documentary Special Jury Prize at the Dubai International Film Festival in 2012. Notes on Displacement\, his second feature length\, about a Palestinian refugee’s flight from Syria to Germany\, received a world premiere at the IDFA Envision Competition in November 2022. \nBanner image: A still from Khaled Jarrar’s film\, Infiltrators. SUMMARY:Buffalo Music: Joyce Manor w/ Militarie Gun\, Teen Mortgage & Combat at Asbury Hall
DESCRIPTION:DSP Shows presents Joyce Manor w Militarie Gun\, Teen Mortgage\, Combat live in Asbury Hall  \n6pm Doors\, 7pm Show \nGeneral Admission Standing for $35 advance\, $40 day of show \n  \nJoyce Manor are California pop-punk legends and I Used To Go To This Bar is this epochal band operating at the top of their game. They continue to deliver relentlessly satisfying rock music in a manner that makes it look simply effortless. The Torrance\, California-hailing trio of Barry Johnson\, Chase Knobbe\, and Matt Ebert are at a point in their career where their position as one of the most beloved rock bands is a foregone conclusion. Their seventh album\, produced by Brett Gurewitz (of Bad Religion and Epitaph Records CEO) finds the group continuing to find rich new veins to tap in their short-and-sweet songcraft without losing an ounce of bite that gained them such repute in the first place. \nA bustle of activity that followed the release of 2022’s excellent 40 Oz. to Fresno and included an instantly memorable appearance on John Mulaney’s Everybody’s in L.A. and a retrospective assessment of the group’s seminal 2011 self-titled debut as part of Pitchfork’s esteemed Sunday Review series. The band’s had a whirlwind touring schedule over the last few years\, which has included an outing with Weezer and multiple sold-out shows at the legendary California venues Hollywood Palladium (including a guest performance by Mark Hoppus for the fan favorite “Heart Tattoo”) and Long Beach Arena. \nThis new record retains the band’s penchant for punchy hooks while sounding fuller\, more in-your-face\, and all-around bigger than ever\, with an all-star crew of collaborators along for this wild ride. Along with mixing pro Tony Hoffer (M83\, Beck)\, behind-the-boards legend Tom Lord-Alge lent his Enema of the State engineer magic to several I Used To Go To This Bar cuts\, including the first single “All My Friends Are So Depressed.” The album also features a rotating cast of drummers\, including touring drummer Jared Shavelson\, Social Distortion’s David Hildago\, Jr.\, and Joey Waronker—the latter of whom is currently hitting the skins for Oasis’ reunion tour. \nI Used To Go To This Bar feels like a true culmination of everything Joyce Manor’s achieved thus far\, further cementing their current legacy as California pop-punk royalty as well as a truly generational punk band at large.

SUMMARY:Buffalo Art: AP Gorny — 'Different from the Rest' at Central Library
DESCRIPTION:The Rare Book Room of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library is honored to acquire and exhibit a selection of artist books and prints made by AP (Anthony Peter) Gorny. Printmaker\, photographer\, sculptor\, bookmaker\, performer — none of these definitions truly capture AP as an artist. A graduate of SUNY Buffalo State University and Yale University’s School of Art\, AP’s artwork is in over 50 institutional collections\, including the Vatican Library\, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, and the Library of Congress. \nThough many of AP’s professional accomplishments extend far beyond Buffalo\, he is a product of this city. AP was born into the insular Polish communities of Buffalo in the mid-twentieth century. When he finally ventured beyond his neighborhood\, the expansive cultural experiences available to him in Buffalo helped shape the artist he was to become. Using oral histories\, digitized materials from Buffalo’s cultural institutions\, and the artist’s own work\, the Library’s Special Collections Department has woven the disparate pieces of AP’s career to show an artist formed in a specific place and moment\, working outside established channels to create a world for himself. \nThe exhibit AP Gorny: Different from the Rest will showcase artist books recently acquired by the Library’s Rare Book Department in close cooperation with AP\, as well as never-before-seen archival documentation and video footage made available through the digitization efforts of the Grosvenor Room. \nSee https://www.buffalolib.org/locations-hours/central-downtown-buffalo for hours. \nOpening reception at Central Library on January 29\, 2026 from 5:30 pm–8:00 pm. Light refreshments will be provided; the curator and artist will be present to talk about the exhibit. Details: https://buffalolib.libcal.com/event/16084892

SUMMARY:Buffalo Art: Stitch Buffalo\, "Zero Waste"
DESCRIPTION:Buffalo Arts Studio is excited to present Zero Waste\, an exhibition of textile work created from reclaimed materials by Stitch Buffalo refugee and immigrant artists and volunteers\, on view from February 27 through April 11\, 2026. An opening reception will be held on Friday\, February 27\, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm as part of M&T Fourth Friday at Tri-Main. \nZero Waste explores how discarded textiles can be transformed into vibrant works of art by combining sustainable practices with artistic creativity. Textile waste and clothing production continue to have a major impact on the environment. The fast fashion industry remains one of the largest consumers and polluters of water—and a major contributor to carbon emissions each year. This environmental impact is connected to the industry’s linear economy: make\, use\, and then discard. \nAbout Stitch Buffalo\nStitch Buffalo is a comprehensive textile art center committed to empowering refugee and immigrant women through the sale of their handcrafted goods\, inspiring creativity and inclusion through community education\, and stewarding the environment through the re-use of textile supplies.  \nFor more information\, please visit www.buffaloartsstudio.org

SUMMARY:Buffalo Art: Marjan Khorramgolkaran\, 'Landless'
DESCRIPTION:Landless is a body of work that explores the intersection of material and meaning through contemporary mixed-media art\, centered on the concept as a metaphor for the fluidity of identity. The project is informed by my personal experience of migration and displacement and examines how identity and a sense of belonging are continuously shaped and transformed through our relationship with place — much like water\, which is perpetually in motion and flux. \nThis collection is further shaped by my current life in Buffalo\, a city defined by the flow of the Erie River\, as well as by memories of growing up near a large lake. These lived experiences intersect with frameworks of psychogeography\, place-memory\, and displacement\, all of which continue to inform and shape my artistic practice. \nNature\, in its entirety\, is in a constant state of movement \ntransformation; this dynamic quality weaves together material\, time\, and lived experience. Water\, as one of the fundamental elements of nature\, functions not only as a direct metaphor for the fluidity of identity and the condition of being landless\, but also as a cosmic substance whose origins extend beyond earthly boundaries. Moving across continents through its natural cycle\, water becomes a mirror reflecting my personal experience of geographic displacement. \nThe series presents various states of water\, ranging from stillness to turbulent waves\, through two large-scale installations\, a drawing\, and a stop-motion video. In one of the large-scale installations\, I used the cyanotype technique on paper and collaged the prints onto more than one thousand pieces of wood\, forming a symbolic reference to Niagara Falls. In the cyanotype process to produce this artwork\, glass played a crucial role in transforming the drawing on paper\, and because the process itself unfolds in liquid\, this work led me to develop a new approach using glass in a subsequent large-scale installation. \nLike water\, glass exists in a fluid and unstable state through processes such as blowing\, casting\, and collage. Moreover\, both glass and water also possess reflective properties capable of mirroring their surroundings. This shared quality deepens their conceptual connection and invites the viewer into a space of introspection and mental reflection. I therefore chose glass as the primary material and as a direct metaphor for water in the second large-scale installation. \nIn front of this installation\, and at the center of a space scaled to match the size of glass artwork\, a small drawing featuring the same pattern will be displayed\, emphasizing the original idea and the transformation from the original drawing to the large-scale glass installation. \n  \n\nArtist Bio\nMarjan Khorramgolkaran is a multidisciplinary artist originally from Tehran\, and currently based in Buffalo\, New York. She is actively engaged in the Western New York arts community while pursuing her second Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree at the University at Buffalo\, SUNY. She holds a master’s degree in Painting and a bachelor’s degree in Textile and Fashion Design from the University of Art in Tehran. \nMarjan’s artistic practice translates nature and the concept of “land” into a visual language. She approaches her subjects from an anthropological perspective rather than through emotional attachment alone\, challenging conventional notions of landscape while exploring the dimensions of place\, identity\, and belonging. Her work incorporates a wide range of materials and techniques\, including drawing\, painting\, photography\, experimental 16mm film\, ceramics\, jewelry making\, and sculpture\, to examine these concepts. \nHer professional trajectory includes significant achievements in teaching\, exhibitions\, and research. She has extensive experience teaching in academic settings\, including the SUNY University at Buffalo\, and has participated as an invited artist in several residencies\, such as the Bethany Arts Community in Ossining\, NY\, and the Openings Residency in Lake George\, NY. In addition\, she has served as a selected juror for multiple art competitions. Her work has been exhibited widely and published in international books\, catalogs\, and magazines. \nRecent selected exhibitions include the Sylvia L. Rosen Craft Art Biennial 2025-2026 at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo\, New York\, the Punto y Raya Festival 2025 Competition in Sofia\, Bulgaria (Selected Artist out of over 600 eligible submissions from 57 countries)\, the Annual Golden Ticket Exhibition 2025 at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center in Cincinnati\, Ohio (Selected Artist out of over 400 eligible submissions)\, I’M SCARED TOO Group Exhibition 2025 at the Bethany Arts Community in Ossining\, New York\, Brockport Art Festival 2025 in Brockport\, New York\, 2025 Regional 90 at the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, 2025 Media Study Student Show Project at the SUNY University at Buffalo\, New York\, First Annual Art Show 2025 at the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, Group Exhibition 2025 at CEPA Art Gallery in Buffalo\, New York\, 2024 Printmakers Showcase at PGNY (Printmakers Guild of New York) in Troy\, New York\, Exchange Group Exhibition 2021 at the Academie Voor Beeldende Kunsten in Ghent\, Belgium\, and more. \nMarjan has also received multiple scholarships and awards supporting her ongoing artistic research and practice in the United States\, including First and Second Place in the Jewelry and Sculpture sections at the 57th Annual Keuka Lake Art Show in 2025\, Second Place in the Jewelry section at the 56th Annual Keuka Lake Art Show in 2024\, First Place for Young Filmmakers across Iran for her video art in 2013\, among others.

SUMMARY:Buffalo Theater: ART's 'An Irish Play' at Compass PAC
DESCRIPTION:American Repertory Theater of WNY presents Dan O’Brien’s pointy stick to the eye dramody\, “An Irish Play”\, March 12th through March 28th at the Compass Performing Arts Factory\, 545 Elmwood Avenue\, Buffalo NY. Tickets are $25 General Admission with additional ticket specials available online by visiting ww.artofwny.org. \nAmateur actors in Cork City\, Ireland\, convene at their local pub-theater for the first read-through of a new Irish play. What no one knows yet is that the play has been written by an American. Over the course of the evening the newly assembled cast debates (in typically Irish fashion) the play’s deficiencies and merits\, who will play which part\, and whether or not to do the play at all. Irish and American cultures come into conflict\, old rivalries reignite\, and secrets are revealed as the group struggles toward an understanding of this enigmatic Irish play. What begins as a comedic examination of Irish theatre and identity becomes by evening’s end a character drama of strong emotional force. \nO’Brien keenly captures the dysfunctional relationships found in our theater world. From the insecurities\, imposter syndrome to showmances and needing a dram or two after a rehearsal or show\, “An Irish Play” has it all. If you are or have been involved in a theater as a producer\, director\, stage manager or actor\, this is a must see piece. \nFeaturing a wicked pissah ensemble of Artie nominated actors Trevor Dugan\, Brooke Goergen\, Rick Lattimer\, Michael Starzynski\, alongside theater veteran Catherine Burkhart\, up-and-coming actors John DellaContrada and Robert Humphrey\, this dark-comedy will take out the green in your beer then replace it with cream & whiskey. Boom! Carbomb\, lads & lasses. Buckle up. \nThurs & Friday 7:30 pm performances\nSaturday 5:00 pm performances

SUMMARY:Buffalo Literature: Author Event – Erricka Willard at Burning Books
DESCRIPTION:Utilizing my conflicting truths and heartfelt inspirational reflections to heal and connect God’s family\nI wish to transform millions of lives: moving people from fear to faith and understanding\, bringing healing\, embracing\, and allowing the love of self first.\nThis is a collection of the many emotions that I battled with for years\, including while I was depressed and suffering from heartache\, amongst other things. It is not meant for you to read this book as a chapter book\, reading from cover to cover\, chapter to chapter\, from the beginning to the end. I purposely wrote it so that you could go directly to the table of contents and locate the chapter title that resonates with you and where you are in your journey in life right now. After you read over the titles of the chapters\, you will know exactly where you need to begin your healing journey.
