His first big break came in 1978 playing John\nLennon in “Beatlemania”\, first as an understudy in New York\, then in the West Coast\ncompany\, followed by a national touring company. Removing himself from that situation in\nFeb. 1980\, Marshall settled in New York City. Enthralled by the hyper-diverse musical\nculture of the City\, and the local Rock scene in particular\, Marshall formed a Rock and Roll\nband with brother Robert on drums and Chris Donato on bass. \n  \nAfter crossing paths with the great and legendary Alan Betrock\, Marshall recorded his\ndebut single “Something’s Gonna Happen” for Betrock’s Shake Records label; at nearly the\nsame time\, legendary Rockabilly singer Robert Gordon’s recording of Marshall’s “Someday\nSomeway” was released as a single on the RCA label. These two records simultaneously\nbroke big on New York’s WNEW-FM\, causing Marshall and his trio’s local popularity to\nexplode. \n  \nAnd so began a career that’s spanned four decades\, 13 albums\, film and TV appearances\n(Buddy Holly in “La Bamba”) and thousands of live performances\nMarshall formed his current touring band in 2022\,featuring guitarist\,\nmulti-instramentalist and record producer Fernando Perdomo\,\nbassist and singer-songwriter Derrick Anderson\,\nand drummer Mark Ortmann\, founding member of the legendary Bottle Rockets. \n  \nOf his City Winery New York show last fall Infocus Visions Music & Arts Magazine hailed\,\n“Marshall Crenshaw live is an experience in itself. DESCRIPTION:Upstate\nIt takes good soil\, and good seasons\, to bear good fruit\, and Upstate has had its plenty. The band sprung up in New York’s legendary Hudson Valley\, set in the middle of a thick American musical heritage. To their inland West was the Ashokan reservoir folk tradition\, and across the river to the East the legacy of Pete Seeger and the Clearwater. Just north of them was Woodstock and Big Pink\, and all the treasured inheritance of Bob Dylan and the Band. Just south was Tony Falco’s famed venue the Falcon\, a refuge and respite for some of the most venerable jazz legends like Sonny Rollins or Joe Lovano. From the first\, Upstate drew liberally from everything each corner had to offer. \nWith their first record\, A Remedy\, they were known for three-part female vocal arrangements recalling “not only the serpentine sibling harmonies of the Roches\, but of the Andrews and Boswell sisters.” They were otherwise known for an eclectic arrangement of instruments weaving together upright bass\, mandolin\, cajon and baritone saxophone. By their second record Healing\, they were likened to Lake Street Dive and “Manhattan Transfer meets Loretta Lynn.” For their third\, You Only Get a Few\, they drew comparisons to the sound of Laurel Canyon\, another American musical landmark on the other side of the continent. This time they had shed the eclectic instrumentation in favor of traditional drums and guitars. \nAfter 15 years\, three records\, nearly a dozen former members\, and one name change\, Upstate could almost seem unrecognizable were it not for the constancy of their songs. Original members Melanie Glenn\, Harry D’Agostino\, and Mary Webster have been writing and playing music together throughout all the upheavals in the band and their lives. It’s their shared dedication to writing songs of lasting value that has persisted across all the changes to their sound. When Dylan Mckinstry finally joined the band in the years of the COVID pandemic\, his enthusiasm for that commitment made it the band’s lasting cornerstone. \nOn their upcoming Abalone\, Upstate draws on the best of what has marked the band in all its many eras. They showcase a broad range of sounds and styles from across America’s musical landmarks\, from the Hudson Valley to Laurel Canyon and back again (with a few detours to Muscle Shoals). They revive their noted three-part harmonies\, this time with McKinstry adding a male voice to the mix. SUMMARY:John Kirk & Trish Miller
DESCRIPTION:Fiddle tunes\, folk songs and fancy footwork are the featured fare from this acoustic duet\, who are longtime Opera House favorites! \nJohn Kirk is the primary vocalist and instrumental wizard on fiddle\, mandolin & more.  Trish Miller plays banjo\, and guitar\, and provides fancy footwork with percussive dance steps. Together\, this married couple has been working and teaching in upstate New York for more than three decades.  They present traditional tunes and witty songs with unique arrangements and warm clear vocals. \nOld time music is the basis for their repertoire\, but they also like to mix in some originals\, Celtic\, early country songs\, humorous selections\, and Appalachian clog dancing. Many songs and tunes are rooted in the local lore of the northeast woodlands. Their story-telling songs and poetic pieces  make their shows fine entertainment for all ages. \nIn 2022\, Kirk was inducted into the North American (& NY) Fiddler’s Hall of Fame.  The duet has twice been nominated for Eddie Awards in New York’s Capitol district.  Both of them are music instructors at Skidmore College\, and Kirk is part of the music faculty at Bennington College\, as well. \nThey have been awarded numerous grants for concerts and teaching including their selection by the US State Department to visit various cities in Eastern Europe.  As teaching artists\, Kirk & Miller have conducted school programs and residencies in music & dance heritage since the 1990s. For many years they have taught at summer music camps\, museums\, libraries\, coffeehouses and more. From Carnegie Hall to their local Flurry Festival\, Kirk & Miller entertain and work to carry on lively traditional tunes and dances. \n​The Folk in Fredonia Music Series is sponsored by the Gilman Family

Twenty years on the road. “My own weariness amazes me\,” as Bob Dylan sings to his Tambourine Man. I feel ya\, Bob. But the depth of my gratitude amazes me too. I’m humbled by the countless gifts of fanship and friendship throughout the past two decades. I would say it’s been a dream\, except I never could have dreamt up most of it. I’ve shared stages and drinks in hotel rooms with my heroes\, met children named after me\, made friendships rooted in music from Auckland to the Arctic Circle\, performed on trains\, on boats\, for Wall Street men in tuxes and for the muddy denizens of a musk ox farm… Not bad for a lonely rambler girl from Idaho. It was always a nebulous gut feeling that got the show on the road\, and so it is now but in reverse. A gut feeling is telling me to get off the road\, at least for now. After 2026\, touring and I will part ways for a year\, maybe two\, maybe fifty…it’s hard to say at this point. I do hope to keep performing in some capacity. Maybe come see me of a weeknight in some Boise dive\, playing for potatoes? Or strumming the guitar for a handful of fellow meditators as we contemplate the Dharma and the temporary nature of all things. I need some time for a new exploration\, to try to be the kind of mother I want to be\, and to stop moving long enough “to let my soul catch up with me\,” as my grandma Jeanne used to say. Who knows what will come of that? Maybe on some jingle-jangle morning I’ll come following the next great dream\, rested and ready to go anywhere. But until then\, suffice it to say…thank you.
