SUMMARY:WNY Literature: Fredonia Zine Fest — A Fresh Start for Spring
DESCRIPTION:Does self-publishing art and writing sound exciting to you? Then\, you are in luck! Join us at Fredonia Zine Fest! \n  \nHosted by the Department of English\, Fredonia’s first-ever Zine Fest (FZF)\, on Saturday\, March 7\, from noon to 4 PM\, in the Williams Center Multi-Purpose Room\, is a celebration of all things “zine.” The event at SUNY Fredonia is free and open to the public. It will conclude with an Open Mic hosted by Writers’ Ring from 4 to 5 PM. \n  \nFor those who may be unfamiliar\, a zine is a self-published short magazine often created from print media clippings\, hand-drawn art\, poems\, short stories and whatever else the author/artist may want to include in their vision.  \n  \nStudents and faculty alike have a deep appreciation for the modest zine. A student from the Senior Writing Capstone\, Lain Pelonero\, says\, “I’m drawn to zines because they allow anybody to share their voice in a creative way that is unique to them. Zines being self-published allows for full creative control of the individual and makes them one of the few remaining forms of subculture that hasn’t been overly commodified or watered down.” Mara Beneway\, event organizer for FZF and a new professor to the English Department\, reflects that\, “Zines are radical! Small yet loud! They are not one thing. Or maybe they are? Material artifacts\, I suppose\, of resistance\, curiosity\, and community.” \n  \nEvent participants are encouraged to bring zines to either trade or generally share. There is no defined payment method for vendors\, but cash and Venmo are likely supported.  \n  \nThe schedule for FZF will offer: \n\n12:00-4:00 PM — Students and Local Vendors\n1:00-1:20 PM — Justin Hoock\, “Rock a Little: Music Zine”\n2-2:20 PM — Burning Books: James Coughlin\, “A City of Distant Neighbors”\n3:00-3:20 PM — Amanda Shepp\, Zines at Fredonia: A Retrospective\n\n  \nFollowing FZF will be: \n\n4:00-5:00 PM — Open Mic hosted by Writers’ Ring\n\n  \nAll presenters are current or former Fredonia students\, including current students Justin Hoock (‘28)\, James Coughlin of 2016\, Amanda Shepp of 2010 and (Rachel) Mara Beneway of 2016.  \nFor more information\, please email Professor Rachel “Mara” Beneway at Rachel.Beneway@fredonia.edu.
