SUMMARY:Low Lily
DESCRIPTION: Low Lily is the colloquial name for the Trout Lily\, a wildflower that grows in the northeast and in regions further afield. Like its namesake\, Low Lily the band has been blooming across the musical landscape since 2015. Simmons (guitar\, banjo & vocals)\, Cohen (guitar\, mandolin & vocals)\, and Sexton (fiddle & vocals) blend their considerable individual talents into a stylistic bouquet of energetic fiddle music\, introspective folk\, bluegrass\, and Americana. The trio has deep roots in the fiddle tune and singing traditions of North America and the Anglo-Celtic diaspora. \nBorn in San Francisco to musician parents\, Liz Simmons spent her early childhood traveling through the wilds of north America in a sky blue VW bus. Her parents were itinerant\, moving from California to Oregon\, then to Ketchikan\, AK\, where they played regular gigs in pubs for the locals. Once the family settled in rural New Hampshire\, Simmons received classical musical training\, but soon found her way back to folk music. She received a BA from Goddard College where she studied American vernacular music of the 1920s and 30s.  She then went on to found Annalivia and then Low Lily with Flynn Cohen\, as well as perform alongside Long Time Courting\, Hannah Sanders\, EVA\, Livingston Taylor\, Tom Chapin\, and others. \nFlynn Cohen\, at the age of 11\, was drawn to the guitar after an injury left him unable to pursue his passion for sports. When he was in his mid-teens\, his aunt and uncle turned him onto the likes of Fairport Convention\, Michael Hedges\, The Bothy Band\, and Pentangle. At the time\, all he wanted was to play guitar like John Renbourn of Pentangle; so when the opportunity to study with Renbourn arose at the Dartington College of Arts in England\, he jumped at the chance. After graduating from Dartington\, he headed to Oakland\, CA\, to attend Mills College\, where he immersed himself in the Irish trad and bluegrass music scenes there. Ultimately\, he made his way to the east coast after a phone call with accordion champion John Whelan\, who offered him a job as his guitarist. Once in Boston\, he was also hired to accompany three incredible fiddle prodigies in their late teens – Laura Cortese\, Hanneke Cassel\, and Lissa Schneckenburger.  Cohen has also accompanied luminaries such as Adrienne Young\, Cathie Ryan\, Ruth Moody\, and many more. \nLily Sexton is a fiddler\, singer\, and songwriter based in western Massachusetts. A student of classical violin beginning at the age of 4\, she continued a classical music education in violin at the Westport Suzuki School\, and the Talent Education Suzuki School. While pursuing a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst\, she shifted her focus to fiddle-playing in the traditional Appalachian style. Sexton’s roots have fostered in her a deep versatility; she is equally at home playing a Kenny Baker breakdown\, a Scottish air\, or finding that elusive 3rd vocal harmony part. Outside of Low Lily\, she is front-woman of the indie-folk band Splendid Torch. She is also beloved in the New England roots music scene as a founding member of the neo-bluegrass band Mamma’s Marmalade. \nLow Lily’s recordings have received noteworthy attention with two #1 songs on international folk radio and two Independent Music Award wins. Their original song Hope Lingers On (written by former band member Lissa Schneckenburger)\, has been sung by choirs around the world as an anthem for peace and justice. \nThe Folk in Fredonia Music Series is sponsored by the Gilman Family

SUMMARY:Live at the Met: Cosi fan tutte
DESCRIPTION:The Met: Live in HD season kicks off at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center with Mozart’s satirical comedy of fickle young love\, one of the composer’s most sublime creations. \nPhelim McDermott’s “colorful\, inventive” (The New York Times) staging\, inspired by Coney Island in the 1950s\, sets the uproarious story at a boardwalk amusement park\, where the two pairs of lovers at the heart of the tale find themselves on one emotional – and literal – thrill ride after another. \nSoprano Federica Lombardi and mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey sing Fiordiligi and Dorabella\, opposite tenor Duke Kim and baritone Andrey Zhilikhovsky as Ferrando and Guglielmo. Bass-baritone Gerald Finley reprises his portrayal of the cynical Don Alfonso\, with soprano Ana María Martínez as the witty maid Despina. \nThe Met: Live in HD is the Metropolitan Opera’s Peabody and Emmy Award–winning series of opera performances transmitted live from the stage of the Met in New York into movie theaters and event spaces worldwide. The series has made the Met the world’s leading provider of alternative cinema content and the only arts institution with an ongoing global series of this scale. When the series launched in 2006\, the Met was the first arts company to experiment this way. Since then\, the program has expanded\, with more than 32 million tickets sold to date\, and has been seen in virtually every important world capital from Paris to Cairo\, as well as in towns and villages spread across six continents. \nThis production runs approximately four hours\, with one intermission \nPart of Arts in the Afternoon\, which is sponsored by Dr. James M. & Marcia Merrins\, Live at the Met is underwritten with support from Daniel S. Kaufman and Timothy W. Beaver

SUMMARY:From Junkman to Stuntman to Car Crash King ... Toby Halicki and Gone in 60 Seconds
DESCRIPTION:Gone in 60 Seconds (1974) propelled the stunt man and mechanic from his humble beginnings working in his family’s junkyard into instant stardom with its genre defining chase scenes\, guerrilla approach to filmmaking\, and car crashes the likes of which had never before been seen. Made on a budget of only $150\,000\, it grossed over $40 million at the box office\, and remains a cult classic to this day. \nHis other major film release\, The Junkman (1982)\, though a commercial failure\, was every bit the wild ride\, including plane crashes\, gun battles\, and even the assistance of the actual Goodyear Blimp. Expanding on the excitement of 60 Seconds\, it also gives further insight into his life experiences with its semi-autobiographical meta-story. A tour de force in its own right\, this hidden gem of a picture provides a prophetic roadmap for the direction Halicki’s career was heading into the 1980s\, and showcases his developing filmmaking ideas\, skills\, and practical stunts. \nHalicki returned to Western New York in the late 1980s to film Gone in 60 Seconds 2\, with car chases throughout North Tonawanda\, Jamestown\, Fredonia\, and Dunkirk that have to be seen to be believed. Tragically\, he was killed during the filming of a stunt\, and the picture was never completed; but his legacy lives on in every car movie made since. \nGraham Tedesco-Blair\, executive director of the Darwin R. Barker Library & Museum Association\, director of the Historical Society of Dunkirk\, and lifelong film buff\, will deliver this talk about Halicki’s life\, his work\, and his tragic death at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center. It will also include film clips\, trivia\, and rarely heard stories about the unbelievably odd creation of the movie. \nBeginning at 4pm\, the fully restored original #1 Red Commander Camaro from Gone in 60 Seconds 2 will be on display in front of the Village Hall. The vehicle was in 49 scenes of the film and was restored by Mark Dietzen. Dietzen also will be on hand to answer questions about the car. \nPresented in Partnership with the Dunkirk Historical Society as part of Here & There – Chautauqua County History\, Travelers\, & Memories \nAdmission is FREE\, although donations are gratefully accepted

SUMMARY:Live at the Met: Macbeth
DESCRIPTION:Two of opera’s most extraordinary artists return to Live at the Met at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center for Verdi’s thrilling take on the immortal Shakespearean tale of the scheming couple determined to seize power at any cost. \nFollowing past triumphs in many of Verdi’s signature baritone roles\, Quinn Kelsey is the Scottish king haunted by the ghosts of his murderous ascent to the throne\, opposite Lise Davidsen – the world’s reigning dramatic soprano – as the power-mad Lady Macbeth\, whose ruinous ambition damns them both. \nMet Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes the podium for a penetrating production by Louisa Proske\, a brilliant young director making waves around the world. Rounding out the all-star cast are tenor Freddie De Tommaso as the heroic Macduff and bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green as Macbeth’s friend-turned-victim Banquo. \nThe Met: Live in HD is the Metropolitan Opera’s Peabody and Emmy Award–winning series of opera performances transmitted live from the stage of the Met in New York into movie theaters and event spaces worldwide.
