At the turn of the century, the main form of entertainment was authors, historians & scientists giving talks about their books & research at theatres, societies, clubs and concert halls.

Salons were held in homes where artists, intellectuals and influential people met to discuss art, politics, philosophy, etc. A soiree was an elegant, intimate, evening social gathering featuring sophisticated, stylish and relaxed mingling and conversation, where food and drinks were served in a home or special venue.
