Buffalo Film — And A Shot Rang Out: A.J. Smitherman & Buffalo’s Connection to the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921

February 21 @ 1:30 pm
Free

Join us for a screening of And a Shot Rang Out, a powerful documentary exploring the life and legacy of A. J. Smitherman, the fearless newspaperman behind the Tulsa Star. After surviving the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, Smitherman relocated to Buffalo, where he went on to publish the Buffalo Star (later the Empire Star), one of the city’s most influential Black newspapers.

Stay for a post-screening discussion with filmmaker Tala Harden and historian Dr. Barbara Seals Nevergold, whose groundbreaking research helped return Smitherman’s story to the public eye. Attendees will also have the rare opportunity to examine original issues of the Buffalo Star from the Library’s collection.
