How can you help?
The Buffalo Hive is a nonprofit journalism startup … which means, yes, we are just getting started. And we need your help?
Here are a few ways you can pitch in:
- Donate. Make a financial contribution. You can make a tax-deductible contribution to The Buffalo Hive right HERE. We are incorporated as a nonprofit charity with New York State, and Arts Services Inc. is serving as our fiscal sponsor while we go through the process of getting 501(c)(3) status as a federal nonprofit.
The key here is that when you go to the ASI page in the link, hit the dropdown box and select The Buffalo Hive. The money will go to ASI (which is also a nonprofit), who will handle it for us.
At this point, we don’t have any reward to offer for contributing, but those will be coming soon.
2. Volunteer! We’re looking for people to help build an organization that will cover ALL that our region has to offer, both in the arts and the wider culture. That means we need your help in letting us know about what’s happening and what needs to be covered in all of the various smaller communities that add up to Western New York.
Among the roles we’re looking to fill with volunteers are:
Board of Directors: We’re looking to build a small group to serve on our board as we move forward into 501(c)(3) status. We’re particularly interested in people who have both expertise in specific areas (journalism, fundraising, finances, etc.) as well as the ability to represent segments of the community whose voices have been too long ignored (GBLT+, East Side, West Side, immigrant communities, etc.).
Calendar assistants. We want our calendar to be the broadest, deepest events listing in the region, including everything from all of the major concerts and theatrical presentations all the way down to the arts shows at your local community center and lenten fish fries at the fire hall. That’s no small task and it will take a lot of help to do it.
Social media assistants: Social media works best when things are shared. We’re looking to have volunteers, interns and – eventually – paid staff to help get the word out on our stories and our calendar.
Advisory editors/Advisory board: If you have an area of expertise that you’d like to keep us up to date with, let us know. We’re looking for people who can help keep us on top of the various specialties that add up to larger scenes. While this would be volunteer work, there would be possibility of it extending into paid freelance work, as well. See below.
Freelancers: This isn’t volunteer. This is paid. We believe that people should be paid for their creative work. While we will be limited in what we pay by what we bring in, this is one of our core beliefs.
