Welcome to the Buffalodown! Always welcoming submissions.
Thank you for joining me in this quest for social connection. This edition is late and short due to deaths in my family – given that my aunt Mary Lou Dietrich and Uncle Msgr. David Gallivan were legendarily committed to social connection, you might have known them or at least appreciate the obituaries linked to their names. I and countless more stand on their shoulders.
Further, given that Reconnecter is inspired in great part by Martin Luther King’s radical commitment to social connection, and in turn this free weekly email was launched last year on MLK Day – plus we have a request from a subscriber for a list of MLK Day events – we carry on this week in all this collective honor.
- once again noting that we’ve launched a calendar collab with The Buffalo Hive – hit The Hive for an ever-growing community events calendar and much more, look for 20 events featured here each week, and follow us on Facebook & Instagram for a video spotlight including the list below!
- adding to the quote about social connection shared here last week from MLK’s Letter from Birmingham Jail, in which he wrote, “In a real sense all life is inter-related. All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be…this is the inter-related structure of reality.”

Musings on Music
Curtis Lovell summoning spirits
The incomparable Curtis Lovell is part of Buffalo AKG Art Museum’s free MLK Day offering this coming Monday, performing at 3:30pm; enjoy this recent video by Linda Appleby of Curtis’ usual set opener, purposefully summoning spirits who’ve left us in body with “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.”
Check the Reconnecter YouTube channel for more videos of Curtis and much more.
