Welcome, many new subscribers this week! This edition is late-arriving – I usually send it midweek.

We’ve announced the panel of experts for my first of many events with Investigative Post – ICE & Immigration in Western New York, a panel and presentation on Wednesday, November 5th, at the Unitarian Universalist Church (695 Elmwood Ave, 7pm) – free admission, please join us!

The event will feature a panel of speakers who work daily with immigrants and refugees, followed by a question-and-answer session. The program will begin with a presentation by J. Dale Shoemaker of his reporting on ICE raids, arrests and detentions of migrants in the region and the detention center in Batavia.

Confirmed panelists include:

  • Jennifer Connor, executive director of Justice for Migrant Families.
  • Pamela Bos Kefi, CEO of Journey’s End Refugee Services.
  • Brittany Triggs, immigration attorney for the Erie County Bar Association’s Volunteer Lawyers Project.
  • Ba Zan Lin, an asylum seeker-turned U.S. citizen from Burma.

More upcoming events being presented by Investigative Post include:

  • A book club discussion on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. at Fitz Books, 1462 Main St., on The Death of Truth by Steven Brill.

Musings on Music

Mohawk Place rises again!

I wrote here back in January and again in March, “Mohawk Place will rise again,” and this weekend, there’s literally an event entitled, Mohawk Rises Again – now in its fourth life, Mohawk Place is an alleycat of music clubs.

“I refuse to believe that Mohawk Place is closing for good,” I wrote in January. “Leave the band pictures on the walls, y’all, bet this ain’t the end.”

Thanks and props to Mohawk’s latest saviors, co-owners Bernice Radle and Frank DiMaria, along with scores of helpers who fixed it up form its state of neglect to reopen this weekend with two shows, plenty more to come – contact the steadiest hand at The Hawk Marty Boratin at buffalosmohawkplace-at-gmail.com to receive his most thorough show updates.

In what they’re calling “phase two” of this revival, they’re also forming a nonprofit Mohawk Music & Arts to activate the spaces above the downtown building they’ve spared from demolition near the corner of Mohawk and Ellicott.

After a test run last night with Brooklyn band Florist – Elmer Ploetz provided a review in The Buffalo Hive – the floors will shake tonight with the return of a spirited party presented by Rise Collaborative. Viva the Hawk!
