Saturday, 4 p.m.: Alyssa Perry will join poets Tia Brown and Thom Eichelberger-Young at a GREEN SPACE Summer Reading hosted by Joe Hall from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17 at Chapin Parkway near Potomac Avenue (use 137 Chapin Pkwy for GPS apps). Free and open to the public.

About the readers:

Alyssa Perry’s first book, Oily Doily, is forthcoming from Bench Editions in fall 2024. Her writing has appeared in Annulet, Fence, the Experimental Sound Studio, Mercury Firs and other publications and journals. Perry is an editor at Rescue Press and poetry editor at Cleveland Review of Books. She teaches at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Thom Eichelberger-Young is an artist, mental health caregiver and student in the Poetics PhD Program at SUNY Buffalo. Their first book is BESPOKE, and their third is forthcoming from Antiphony Press in October. Thom edits Blue Bag Press, a publisher of innovative writing. Their essays, poems, interviews and other writing have appeared in numerous publications internationally.

Tia Brown is a multidisciplinary creative. They are the former editor of Utterance and their work has been featured in One for One Thousand, CivicScience, truthout and Qween City. When they’re not writing they’re performing as Projections, an audiovisual examination of the human condition during end times that haven’t quite come to an end. They currently live in their hometown of Buffalo, New York.

As with all GREEN SPACE events, the reading will be followed by a Zine Swap & Sale open to anyone on the indie publishing scene. Free and open to the public.

Sunday, Noon to 5 p.m.: Just Buffalo Literary Center and the Western New York Book Arts Center present Zinefest 2024, sponsored by Gutter Pop Comics. ZineFest will be held on all three floors of 468 Washington Street. Free and open to the public.

About the event:

At ZineFest, local zinesters will gather to distribute, trade and sell their creations. Visit through all three floors to get lost in a photocopied sea of zines, and to meet and conspire with fellow artists and zinemakers.

About Zines:

Zines defy definition and categoriation but here are some words and terms you might see associated with them: handmade, self-published, DIY(Do-It-Yourself as an aesthetic), underground, cheap, hyperlocal, radical, queer, feminist, photocopied, misspelled. Inside a zine you might find poems, comics, manifestos, recipes, collages, gardening advice, lyrics and handy tips for your neighborhood activist.
