CORE VALUES: Local hardcore bands release together.

It’s no mean feat to catch all the local hardcore bands’ gigs as they often play the same night at different venues. It’s been suggested that maybe bands should get together on one bill and not split the audience into two or three … But this has never gone over well.
And so it’s with some relief that we can expect to see two key Buffalo-area bands on the same night, on the same bill, in the same room, releasing new material to their waiting fans.
Selfish Act, a five-piece featuring Owen Jones, vocalist; Griffin Coyne, guitar; Conor Kennedy, bass; David Wagner, drums; and Josh Link on lead guitar, will be headlining the Dec. 6 show at Amvets Post 13 at 25 Review Place, to release the band’s EP, “Wellness Check.”
The similarly revered Juggernaut, made up of Rich Robinson, guitarist; Jorden Cudzillo, vocals; Dylan Roberts, guitarist; Dillon Butcher, bassist; and Mike “Union” Jeffers on drums, will be releasing its work “Comatose Congregation.”

Also scheduled to play are is local band Hold Out, Gavel from Hamilton, Ont., and Rochester’s Hard to Know.
“(It’s an) old school VFW Hall,” Jeffers said of the site of the show. “Juggernaut and Selfish Act are tight. We always support each other. It’s cool for Juggernaut, old, to share a record release with Selfish Act, young.
“(We’re) showing Buffalo what friendship and support really means regardless of age.”
Jeffers said that there is 25 years difference in age between oldest and youngest members of the two bands.
“I’ve been friends with Griffin’s family for 30-plus years,” he said
“Comatose Congregation” can be streamed here and is ready to launch a room into explosive movement as ever. Songs like “Cradle of Judas” and “Forced Misery” are both three-and-change-minute songs that rock and clash across the nerves of the listener.
Selfish Act’s “Wellness Check” will also be released and single “A Mother’s Love” can be found here. The use of samples in the hardcore band’s work can also be found in the band’s previous work, such as “White Whale,” released last year.
Selfish Act can be heard at its peak power in short, two-minute songs where Jones can unleash his vocal power. Also, seeing Jones in the crowd, whipping across the room, is something that shouldn’t be missed.
Hold Out, another local Buffalo hardcore favorite, can be found here playing “Take the Knife” on their 2019 demo.
Hard to Know, a five-piece from Rochester can be seen here playing their first show in 2022 in a basement, a scene familiar to showgoers across the world.
Gavel, from Hamilton, Ont., will also be performing at Amvets. Check out their 2022 show here.
Doors open at 6 p.m., $10 cover or PWYC.
