Stories & Events for Social Connection

By Seamus Gallivan

  • Celebrating Buffalo’s status as an international city
  • Musings on Music: “fruits of Afro-Caribbean music harvested in New York”
  • Featured Events: 29 this week, always encouraging submissions!
  • Links to the Deep End: Investigative Post, The New York Times, Globe & Mail

Welcome to the Buffalodown, thank you for your attention!

Do you, like me, love how Buffalo is a melting pot of cultures from all over our world?

Do you realize that the white nationalism of the Trump administration is actively dismantling our status as an international city?

From crossing our border with Canada to welcoming the immigrants and refugees whose presence – especially the latter – made for Buffalo’s first population increase in some 70 years, every way in which we celebrate this status is a threat to an administration that’s tearing us apart between culture and trade wars and masked detention squads.

Whether you wanna shake your fist at the man or simply be in a beloved and diverse community, included in the events listed below as well as the newly renamed Links to the Deep End are many ways to learn more and stand in solidarity.

As always, please share this Buffalodown with anyone who might appreciate it, and encourage them to subscribe and support!

Musings on Music

“Fruits of Afro-Caribbean music harvested in New York”

Staying on the subject above and continuing from last week here about the musical wizardry of Harry Graser, one of the many groups he anchors has a couple upcoming offerings of their wonderful “fruits of Afro-Caribbean music harvested in New York.”

Guabaza, formed by percussionist Michael Ruopoli who’s known to many musically as part of bands the Damone Jackson Outcome and Farrow as well as the El Batey Puerto Rican Center, is a rotating collective that cultivates kindred rhythms and rearrangements into a joyful sound of their own, somehow both carefully curated and in the moment.

See below for videos, and see them live this Saturday at Pausa Art House in Allentown and August 31st at Revolver Records on Elmwood.

Deeper dives into issues that matter for social connection

ICE separates parents, 2-year-old child – article, Investigative Post – “Local agents arrested and split up a Dunkirk family last month. Immigration advocates believe the Trump administration has reinstated a policy of separating immigrant families.”

Trump Said Family Separations Would End. They’re Happening Again. – podcast, The Daily by The New York Times – “During President Trump’s first term, the intentional separation of migrant child from their parents shocked the country and persuaded Mr. Trump to say he would end the practice for good. Hamed Aleaziz, who covers immigration policy for The Times, has found that in Mr. Trump’s second term, the practice has returned.”

The state of Canadian tourism in the ‘elbows up’ moment – podcast, Globe & Mail – “Travel to the U.S. has plummeted ever since U.S. President Donald Trump started talking about annexing Canada and imposing tariffs on us. Politicians on this side of the border are embracing the moment, encouraging people to take trips closer to home. So how is it all working out for Canadian tourism?”

Mahmoud Khalil Tells His Story – podcast, The Ezra Klein Show – “Mahmoud Khalil was a leader in Columbia University’s pro-Palestinian protests. In March, he was arrested by ICE agents and held for more than 100 days in a Louisiana detention facility. The Trump administration claims Khalil is deportable — even though he has a green card, married to a U.S. citizen — because he poses a threat to U.S. foreign policy goals.

“Khalil’s alleged offense here is speech.

“Khalil is out now on bail, and he’s still speaking. I wanted to hear what he had to say.”
