The notebook: Pop-up show at Sportsmen’s, Kavinoky Newsies and Old First Ward Fest apps
News and notes from around the community
This is a new feature. Quite often, we get notes that aren’t really big enough for a full story. Or maybe something has just popped up.
So the editor’s notebook will be where they will live. Eventually we may have enough info for notebooks in different areas (music, theater, art, film, etc.). But meanwhile, everything will land together in this little piece of The Buffalo Hive.

The Sportsmen’s Tavern, 326 Amherst St., Buffalo, has had a pretty cool event pop-up for tomorrow night (Monday, Aug. 19). Members of the Tedeschi-Trucks Band and Margo Price’s band are doing a free show at 9 p.m. (doors open at 5). (Editor’s note: the starting time has been moved from 7 to about 9 p.m.)
As the Sportsmen’s Facebook post says, “They’re playing for tips so bring some cash. Hope to see you there. Could be really fun night!!!”
The bands will be in town a night before Price opens for the Tedeschi Trucks Band at Artpark (Tuesday, Aug. 20), which should be a great show in its own right.
Thanks to Jeff Miers for the heads up on the Sportsmens’ happening.

Tickets are already on sale for the D’Youville Kavinoky Theatre’s production of “Newsies” at Shea’s 710 Theatre. It’s the Kavinoky debut show at the Shea’s 710 Theatre, the former site of Studio Arena.
The show will be running from Sept. 12 to Sept. 29.
The Kavinoky version will have one song specifically written for the national touring version that wasn’t in the Broadway version (which had songs that weren’t in the original 1992 movie musical that started it all!).
