A Letter from the Editor, Dec. 1, 2024
Giving Tuesday draws near
Hello to all of our readers! The past four-plus months have been a flurry of activity at The Buffalo Hive.
We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished since we launched on July 22:
- Over 430 posts, including feature stories, previews, reviews, curated calendars, podcasts and videos.
- The work of over a dozen paid freelancers.
- Collaborations with some of the most foremost arts writers in the Buffalo region (we’re talking about, among others and in alphabetical order, Colin Dabkowski, Ron Ehmke, M. Faust, Andrew Galarneau, Seamus Gallivan, Jeff Miers, Melinda Miller, R.D. Pohl).
- Working with younger/newer writers, helping to shape their work for publication as they inform the public and build their resumes.
- Adding thousands of events to our events calendar. There are currently several hundred.
But there’s a lot more to do. We want to cover more stories and build out our calendar and do everything better than we have to this point.
One of the things we haven’t done well enough to this point is to ask for your support. The Buffalo Hive is a nonprofit online journalism startup, but even nonprofits have expenses. The Buffalo Hive takes great pride in paying our freelancers. There are startup costs for technology and legal costs in attaining 501(c)(3) status, too.
So that’s where you come in. We need your support to keep doing the work we’re doing and to do it even better. This Tuesday (Dec. 3) is Giving Tuesday, and it’s one chance for you to step forward and support the work we’re doing.
Every dollar makes a difference, so whether it’s a gift of $25, $50, $100, $500 or even $1,000 , you can help us tell the stories that matter and keep Western New York’s cultural heartbeat alive.
You can contribute to The Buffalo Hive at THIS LINK. It will take you to Arts Services Inc., where you can make a tax-deductible donation. Just hit the drop arrow where it says “Please Select One,” and choose The Buffalo Hive. The Buffalo Hive is a New York State charitable nonprofit corporation, and ASI is serving as our fiscal sponsor, which means they handle our donations while we’re in the process of getting our federal 501(c)(3) status.
Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, and to those who are about to!
News and notes:
Every new organization evolves, and that is true with The Buffalo Hive as well.
We would like to thank Frank Housh for his efforts as managing editor over the first three months of the Hive’s existence – and over many months of preparation for the launch. His input and efforts have been invaluable.
Frank has transitioned to contributing editor now, which means that he will still be collaborating with The Buffalo Hive as he shares his Media Room content with us (including music, film and art) and offers his input on book reviews and classical music coverage.
Joining us as a part-time editorial assistant is Chloe Kowalyk, a 2024 SUNY Fredonia graduate (and Chancellor’s Award winner). Chloe will be managing some of the editing and posting duties of The Buffalo Hive.
