Core Values: DIY space welcomes Brotality, PRAUN

Buffalo Music: Robbery Club, Steel Bashers opening

By Benjamin Joe

Brotality and PRAUN are coming to the Hen House on Friday, with support from local bands Robbery Club and Steel Bashers.

Rob of Robbery Club said the show, “definitely has a little bit of everything. … We love playing the Hen House. The more DIY spots the better because they shut down as quick as they show up.”

Hen House is at 690 Hertel Avenue in Buffalo.

Robbery Club is influenced by California pop-punk and it recently released a music video (“Never Better”) linked to its Instagram page. Rob is a transplant from Long Island, but went to college in Fredonia. The move to Buffalo was always a strong likelihood.

“I love the scene, I love the community here. Being a part of it and now having bands being a part of it, that I’ve created, it’s quite literally the reason I moved out here,” he said.

Paired next to Robbery Club’s more light vibe, Brotatlity and PRAUN are both harder and very much metal. PRAUN, a Rochester groove metal band, said they were excited, having heard a lot about Hen House. Brotality also expressed excitement, but did not elaborate.

Steel Bashers is an Oi!/street punk outfit that is relatively new to the scene. Their first demo was released in March and can be found on Bandcamp.

“I think they’ll definitely bring the energy,” Rob said of the other bands on the bill. “It’s just a matter if fans will show up. … That’s the other thing about local, DIY shows in smaller cities is that they’re either electric, or sometimes you might get a dud or two.

“But I mean, the band from Rochester (PRAUN) is sick. Steel Bashers rock. They’re such a young band and they’re only getting better. They’re great. I think they’re recording music again really soon if they haven’t already done it.”

After being asked why he continues to play music, Rob grappled with the words.

“The live music experience and how cathartic that can feel,” he settled on. “It’s about feeling. It really is. Whether you’re playing to 20 people at a DIY spot or you’re playing in front of 10,000 people at a festival in Europe, it’s really magical. It’s really a cool thing. That’s why I do it. It’s definitely not the money, because I don’t make anything off of music.

“Keep going to shows. Just keep supporting your scene. It quite literally takes a village. That’s how this sh*t works out and keeps going.”

The show is $15 advance, $18 at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m. and music starts at 8 p.m.
