Infringement: The Art of The Turn-Up
By Miggie Jean
I will begin with a descriptor for the conclusion of the third day of Infringement. “It was very much a smoke show.”
The night before, we enjoyed steamy R&B and hip-hop vocals headlined by Jay Aquarious, but this evening (Saturday, July 27) was all about the art of the dance. The Mothership featured drag, burlesque and flow. Amethyst Taylor dazzled us with her unique artistry and the uptempo music was the perfect backdrop.
Highlights to make you move those feet included African American Cultural Center drum and dance, Surge Dance Company and Hayatidance Studio also breaking it down for us at the Raymond Klimek Veterans Park.

The Lawn Disco at Ol’ Wondermoth was a variety show to end all variety shows. Spectators and performers flooded the lawn on the corner of North and Elmwood.
El the Mime was entertaining with her bag of tricks, and Esther Fitz graced us with more of her neo-soul vocals; she traveled all the way from Cleveland, Ohio. Some other performances included the Blood Thirsty Vegans (rebel hip-hop music) and Fibberton with a brilliant satirical performance.
The singer-songwriters definitely showed up at Caffé Aroma and Scoop Shop Consignment but there were plenty of opportunities to rock out. Sardine brought some alternative post-punk to the programming, while inSINcere channeled the greats of grunge music. Henry Raess created impromptu poetry and stories on his trusty typewriter.
The Dudley branch library saw its share of poets, storytellers and serenades. Dead Musician Society and Pop-up Shakespeare are some standouts that come to mind.
We will end this post with the beginning of day three because tomorrow, we will see a continuation of more literary performances. It’s Sunday for goodness’ sake! We can’t boogie on our Lord’s Day, for we were founded by Puritans, if you’ll remember (at least according to some of the history books!).
