Editor’s Note: This article is part of The Buffalo Hive’s “Spotlight Performance” series. In this series we seek to highlight artists with artistic merit whose work may not be well known in Western New York. “Spotlight Performance” previously featured Antje Duvekot’s September 7, 2024 performance at The Meeting House.
Stephanie Lambring began her career working for a music publisher in Nashville, writing songs as part of a group meant to be sold to performers. The work was interesting and the publisher wanted to renew her contract but, in an interview with The Buffalo Hive, Lambring explained why she walked away.
Lambring said, “writing for others created an existential crisis. Also, I was making more money waiting tables than writing songs.” She wrote no music for a full year, until regular diner and country music elder statesman Tom Douglas convinced her to “write just one song.” The result was “Daddy’s Disappointment,” which developed into her first album “Autonomy” (2020).
Lambring’s songs stride fearlessly into the dark, scary places of the human experience, taking on issues such as childhood trauma, body image, and death with empathy and grace. She developed these themes in her second album, “Hypocrite,” released April 2024 .
Lambring said, “if my last record was, ‘here is my pain,’ then Hypocrite is, ‘here is my shit.’ I see myself in all these characters, for better or worse.”
Stephanie Lambring is performing at Babeville’s 9th Ward at 8:00PM on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. For tickets and more information click here.
