For those looking for a string of new music to back up a nice relaxing summer, you could start with Tough Old Bird. On June 24, the band released its anticipated single, “Wednesday’s Child.”
Formed by brothers Matthew and Nathan Corrigan, Tough Old Bird began as an acoustic duo and released their first full-length studio album “Gambling Days” in 2016. After years of touring the country, the brothers expanded their ranks to include Brendan O’Shea (Bass) and Rick Bechard (Drums).
From humble beginnings, Tough Old Bird has released multiple EPs, singles and three studio albums. Each of their songs encompasses a unique blend of classic genres through a modern lens. The band weaves together a traditional folk-rock sound with alternative rock, roots rock and classic country.
‘Wednesday’s Child’ continues this trend in style, adding more modern influences to Tough Old Bird’s sound. The song’s crisp, lively vocals are supported by smooth, mellow instrumentation that evokes nostalgia within the listener. On top of their signature time-bending sound, the single captures the sound of a live band with little overdubbing.
This sound was accomplished through multiple recording sessions at Sunwood Studios over the past year. Intending to recreate their live sound in a studio setting, Tough Old Bird seems to have really crafted something special if “Wednesday’s Child” is only the first of these tracks to be released.
Speaking of which, Tough Old Bird plans to release each of these singles every three weeks throughout the summer. So if you’re an existing fan or interested in checking out the band, you have plenty to look forward to aside from the warm weather.
For those looking for live performances, Tough Old Bird will be playing Aug. 7 at Duende at Silo City.
Pocketship: Upcoming Debut Single
Buffalo-based 11-piece band Pocketship is preparing to blast off with their debut single.

On June 26, the band played a show at Nietzsche’s that doubled as the set for an upcoming music video.
Self-described as a future-funk/disco dance collective, Pocketship prides itself on showmanship and dance with their lively performances, reminiscent of bands such as The B-52s.

Science Man: Recent Buffalo Performances
Coming fresh off a month-long tour across Europe, Science Man has returned to Buffalo to continue a streak of rattling performances.
Originally a one-person act helmed by John Toohill, Science Man has grown into a full group performing their brand of post-hardcore punk that bends both genres and minds.
The band expands its hard-hitting sound with visually crafted videos that hark back to the trippy graphics of Monty Python. The lyrics unveil distorted dystopian worlds and themes hidden under the fuzzy guitar riffs and deep, bellowing vocals.
Fans of dark psychedelic rock and the underground hardcore scene will want to check out this project. Of Toohill’s many projects, Science Man stands out as something truly unique and special.
Toohill and Science Man performed a short set on June 26, at Hickory Urban Sanctuary in Buffalo. You can find a video recording of the set below from the ‘lakeeriemonster ‘ YouTube channel.
Mother Nature’s Son: New Release Show for ‘The Seven People You Meet In Heaven’
A few weeks after the release of their debut single “The Seven People You Meet In Heaven,” indie rock band Mother Nature’s Son continues to make their presence known throughout Buffalo.
On June 25, Mother Nature’s Son performed at Area 54 to celebrate the release of their first full-length album.
The performance encompassed years of dedication and passionate work that seem to have paid off greatly for the band.
The album’s tracks encompass a lot of what the indie genre has to offer. From the upbeat and nostalgic riff that introduces “Angel Attack” to the light and flowing licks of “Year of the False Spring.”
Each song brilliantly finds common ground between quiet, catchy melodies and distorted riffs that rise in both volume and energy, driving the songs forward. This is all supported by tight instrumentation and vocals that string the perfectly balanced album together.
“The Seven People You Meet In Heaven” can be streamed on all platforms. If you find yourself wanting more, the band released a music video for their song “Angel Attack” that is available to view on their YouTube channel.
