Welcome to the Buffalodown, thank you for your attention!
Always welcoming submissions.
Happy to have at least one week off from the “In Memoriam” intro – shout out to everyone who attended the jam-packed memorials for Mickey Harmon and Jordan Celotto as well as Greg Olma over the weekend, basking in the beloved community, inspiring even as we mourn…
…looking ahead, and with the radical activist spirits of the aforementioned, continuing to be clear and open about the content and underlying intentions of Reconnecter, repeating what’s been written on the homepage since Day One:
Reconnecter seeks to expand our understanding of social connection – everyone needs to be seen, loved and valued, and wherever these needs are unmet lies the seeds of social unrest – serving as a guiding light on the quest for beloved community.
In short, this is a space that includes justice and politics as part of social connection – they and we are all connected.
While the tumultuous start of the second Trump administration is hitting home here in Buffalo, we’re also in a mayoral election year, as Mickey would sure want you to know. In this space, difficult subjects will be discussed and sides will be taken.
Each week, I include opportunities to show up for causes in the event listings, from civic action to simpler events for social connection such as concerts and maple syrup-centric splendor that Olma would’ve loved, along links to learn in the listening and reading sections – I stay calling for input, please send me anything relevant!

Trimania Reboot Offers Music and Much More This Saturday
All hail the return of Trimania! The once tri-annual, tri-floor art extravaganza inside the Tri-Main Building will reconvene in all its glory this Saturday for the benefit of Buffalo Arts Studio, after a seven-year absence.
Simply put, it’s easily one of Buffalo’s biggest one-day displays of art and community – I consider it a can’t-miss event, and appreciate the causes in serves, from the year-round brilliance of Buffalo Arts Studio and the many businesses and nonprofits that call Tri-Main home, to the underlying cause of social connection in the ways it brings thousands of people together through a sprawling feast for the senses.
Here are a few favorites of mine among the long list of live music locations – Alex McArthur, DJ Cutler, Walter Kemp 3 & DJ Sike and more along with live art by Edresy Wajed in the Eat Off Art Studio (Suite 441); Miller & the Other Sinners, Grace Stumberg, Ten Cent Howl and more on a Sportsmen’s Americana Music Foundation stage inside Diversified Labor Solutions (Suite 232); and the BPD Trio, Jazz De Nero and A.I. the Anomaly in Arts Services, Inc. (Suite 401).
Looking forward to seeing so many beloveds there – including as fellow volunteers, for which they need hundreds, come help if you can!

Listening Links
What are you listening to? Please send links!
“Tradition Keepers” looking to spread the knowledge forward – WBFO – “People think, oh, you just get up there and tell a story, but there’s a whole process to first finding a story that you want to tell, finding an audience or a place that’s appropriate to tell the story, and then the process of learning the story.”
The Collapse of Early Childhood Intervention – The Public Good – “More and more children need help with developmental benchmarks between the ages of 0-5 years old, while doctors, therapists, and providers are unable to meet the current need and have waitlists from 6-months up to a year.”
How empathy came to be seen as a weakness in conservative circles – NPR – “…people are looking for a moral frame around which they can fit the Trump movement, and decrying empathy helps them do that.”
Silencing the Voice of America – Today, Explained – “President Donald Trump has ordered the federally funded broadcaster to be “eliminated.” Longtime VOA correspondent Steve Herman explains why it will be missed.”
In the Flamingo Lounge with Rockabilly Greg, episode 150: Seamus Gallivan – who wants to listen to a whole hour of me rambling?! Seriously grateful for Greg and this historical document of Buffalo’s music scene, now 150 episodes of open-ended stories behind the scenes – hopefully you’ll find this episode enjoyable, especially if you’ve bothered to subscribe to Reconnecter and read this far into it.
Reading Rundown
Always welcoming links to read and share at seamus@reconnecter.org.
Another Voice: City must take charge on Humboldt reconstruction – The Buffalo News – “The East Side was once blessed with a park environment. Humboldt Parkway extended from Delaware Park all the way to Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Approximately 150 years ago, city leaders recognized this stretch of parkland as the “lungs of the city.” Replacing this green parkland with tens of thousands of cars that rush through the area daily has resulted in a community health crisis.”
Local coalition is giving away money to individuals, families, small businesses – The Buffalo News – “Approximately $1 million a year will be distributed via three grant programs over the next 10 years.”
“Putting People First” Pays Dividends for Workers at Extra Extra – Buffalo Rising – “Extra Extra is the first and only tipless pizza and wine bar in WNY, and they’re also a worker-owned cooperative.”
If Trump can disappear them, he can disappear you – Robert Reich – “With no court to verify anything the Trump regime alleges, you could be arrested and sent to a prison in El Salvador for having views the regime dislikes.”
From sewage and scum to swimming in ‘blue gold’: how Switzerland transformed its rivers – The Guardian – “In the 1960s, the Swiss had some of the dirtiest water in Europe. Now, their cities boast pristine rivers and lakes – and other countries are looking to follow their lead.”
