Musings on Music
Shinyribs to debut in Buffalo

When the faraway corporate-owned music club Electric City opened in the former Tralf nearly three years ago, I said that while I stand in solidarity with the locally-owned clubs threatened by Electric City’s capacity to overpay for touring acts in attempt to put their beloved competitors out of business, like most of us I’ll eventually go when they book one of our favorite acts; that time has finally come for me, as Austin-based Shinyribs is finally coming to Buffalo, more than 20 years since I was first wowed by frontman Kevin Russell soon after moving to Austin, and told him that Buffalonians would love him if he ever made a tour stop here.

The bayou-born “Pavarotti of the Pineywoods” will roll in this coming Tuesday, August 25th, and I’d love to see a full house to welcome his wonderfulness. Truly unique in his sound and stage presence, Russell is the total package of singing, songwriting, guitar and ukulele slinging, and holding a crowd’s attention from ballads to bops – he’s able to bring folks to tears both comedically and through his heartfelt songs, just a bundle of joy with soul-stirring depth to boot.

Shinyribs’ bio reads: “Shinyribs defies genres as a sonic melting pot of Texas Blues, New Orleans R&B funk, horn-driven Memphis Soul, country twang, border music, big band swing, and roots-rock. The Austin-based nine-piece (sometimes 10-piece) supergroup is led by Kevin Russell, the charismatic frontman with colorful suits and extravagant shoes who continuously swaps out an electric guitar for a ukulele and never falls short of creating a cinematic experience with on-stage antics that often include him donning a light-up cloak or leading a conga line through the crowd.”

Please let me know if you’re planning to go!
