Musings on Music
Ghost-Note Looms Large in a Big Month Ahead for Babeville We could all use some “conscious funk” in our ears and lives; heads up that next Wednesday, September 11th, Asbury Hall will host a sound described as such by Texas troubadours Ghost-Note, led by two members of musician-favorite collective Snarky Puppy in drummer Robert “Sput” Searight and percussionist Nate Werth.
Ghost-Note leads with that percussive glory and instrumental prowess of Snarky Puppy, offering an evolution of the James Brown sound with a shared spotlight on each player’s dazzling skills and resumes, from Sput’s spins with Herbie Hancock and Kendrick Lamar to many members having rolled with Prince.
Described as “bold and in your face, focusing on seductive, danceable grooves and a contagious, feel-good energy. Each performance is an opportunity to let loose and connect, for both fans and musicians alike,” Ghost-Note rolls in Chicago producer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Phoelix set to open a sure throwdown.

See below for more shows in the Asbury Arts Center this week!

Listening Links
As we prepare to launch the Reconnecter podcast and a section for podcasts on our website, adding weekly listening links that align with the intentions of Reconnecter.
- What’s Next? | A Celebration Like No Other – WBFO – Looking back a bit, “joined by Lindsey Taylor, the founder of Beau Fleuve, to discuss the multifaceted nature of the organization, and the recent announcement concerning Gibson Development.”
- Singer, Songwriter, and “Old Soul,” Michael DeLano – Why Music Matters with Jeff Miers – “Michael Delano may be young in the chronological sense, but one listen to his singing, his songwriting, and his elegant use of sophisticated open guitar tunings makes it plan that he’s an old soul.”
- Why Tipping Is Everywhere – The Daily by The New York Times – “Tipping, once contained to certain corners of the economy, has exploded, creating confusion and angst. Now, it is even becoming an issue in the U.S. presidential campaign.”
- Stuck in space – Today Explained by Vox – “Bloomberg’s Loren Grush explains how two astronauts got stuck on the International Space Station and astronaut Cady Coleman tells us why she is jealous of them.”
- What’s Next? | Reconnecting to Prevent Social Unrest – WBFO – Leaving this link up for a while, as I’m honored to have been invited onto this profound program – this went real deep from the jump, please listen! Here’s how they described it: “Seamus Gallivan’s latest endeavor is Reconnecter, a ‘social connection space’ that aims to bring people together in person and online ‘by illuminating the ties that bind us.’ That means music showcases, variety shows, and media elements — all to help provide a need that he believes can help prevent social unrest. Gallivan sits down with Thomas O’Neil-White to speak about the power of reconnection and his plans for the new project.”
Reading Rundown
- With intent to connect, inform, and inspire action, every Reconnecter Roundup closes with links to other sources and stories that deserve more attention. Always welcoming links to read and share at seamus@reconnecter.org.
- Hat tip to Andrew Galarneau, longtime food writer whose new venture Four Bites continues his community-centric coverage of food sources and news in Western New York. Below are four bites consumed as a steady subscriber, from his own writing to curated links.
- ‘We are the monkey’: Refugee ex-clients charge WEDI with ‘exploitation’ – Four Bites – “Saying WEDI made money while hurting the people it was supposed to help is a serious charge. Interviewed separately with interpreters, the former clients speaking for this story backed up claims with documents, emails, bank records, and text messages.”
- Providence Farm Collective honored for getting farmers back to soil – Four Bites – “On 37 acres of Orchard Park farmland, the non-profit’s 29 farms help feed more than 11,000 Western New Yorkers. New neighbors arrived from places that traditionally farmed to feed their families have been able to return to the land.”
- It’s Time to “Eat Local WNY” – Buffalo Rising – “Project spearheaded by UB researcher includes a pledge encouraging people to track local food spending.”
- Foodnerd: Revolutionizing how toddlers eat – Buffalo Spree – “Our goal—my mission in life—is to set new standards for product processing, standards, and for there to be more transparency in food production. Everyone deserves to know what is in their baby’s products.”
Thank YOU for reading this far and being part of it all – extra thanks to everyone supporting this work with a membership at www.reconnecter.org!
